You’ve got to say, I think that if I keep working at this and want it badly enough I can have it. It’s called perseverance.

You have to stay in shape. My grandmother, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She’s 97 today and we don’t know where the hell she is.

inner wolf

inner wolf

When thinking about the inner game of weight loss and changing eating style, I think the Native American story of the two wolves is helpfull to enable me to make inner as well as behavioural changes

A Grandfather from the Cherokee Nation was talking with his grandson.

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.

“It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.”

“One wolf is evil and ugly: He is anger, envy, war, greed, self-pity, sorrow, regret, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, selfishness and arrogance.”

“The other wolf is beautiful and good: He is friendly, joyful, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, justice, fairness, empathy, generosity, true, compassion, gratitude, and deep VISION.”

“This same fight is going on inside you, and inside every other human as well.”

The grandson paused in deep reflection because of what his grandfather had just said. Then he finally cried out; “Oyee! Grandfather, which wolf will win?”

The elder Cherokee replied, “The wolf that you feed.”

If we keep on feeding the greedy wolf, then he will become stronger and more powerful. We feed him with our belief in his words and our fear of his loud voice and ability to creat difficult sensations inside us. We must stop believing in him because his lies are making us grow fat and unhealthy.

If we feed the balanced healthy, stable wolf with a healthy way of eating, with new beliefs, with love and positive energy, then the hungry wolf will grow weaker and quietenand the healthy wolf will be free with bounding energy to run and play and feel young again.

Just a brief note to send my thanks to Jack Mecham and to recommend his blog and in particular an inspiring article called Exercising for weight loss at: http://blog.mattmecham.com/2007/05/14/exercising-for-weight-loss/
Now don’t get all hysterical and start leaping out of windows or hiding behind the sofa. Jacks article, certainly for me is inspiring and on the nail; it isn’t about running miles coughing and choking in the dark with a paper bag over your head to hide your identity from the neighbours “Oh look there’s that fat bloke trying to run around the block again.”
No don’t worry, it’s about the relevance of moderate resistance training to tone your muscles. The equation in Jacks terms is that the better the muscle form the more weight loss. In his own words: “A lot of people fear weight training because they assume that they’ll end up like Arnie in his prime. That’s simply not true. Arnie put in years and years of hard 6 day a week training to achieve his physique. Our aim is to increase our muscle mass and definition, commonly known as ‘to tone’”.
Hey I’m already on the web looking for a cheap set of weights.
